You never pick one. Fight with a sword and your melee goes up. Take hits and your defence does. There are sixteen skills and you earn every one of them by doing it.

You never pick one. Fight with a sword and your melee goes up. Take hits and your defence does. There are sixteen skills and you earn every one of them by doing it.
Ore comes out of the quarry, goes through the smithy and ends up as the sword in your hand. Swords and tools wear down with use, so there is always a reason to go back for more. Mining, woodcutting and fishing work today; smithing and crafting are next.
Every swing, drop and trade is checked by the server. Nobody can walk through a wall or decide how hard they hit. Pulling the plug halfway through a fight doesn't help either: your character stays in the world for a while after you disconnect.
Right now there's one island with a village, a farm, a harbour, a quarry and a few woods, a handful of creatures and about forty items. Two people will have seen most of it in an evening. It grows a piece at a time.
We rebuilt the game client this month. The world and its rules are the same, running on the same server, but everything you look at is new.
